A Close Look At Kyocera Rise – The QWERTY Sliding Keyboard Handset With Ice Cream Sandwich

Hoping for a successful comeback into the American smartphone market, Kyocera is targeting niche customers, strange as it may seem. It started with Hydro, a water-resistant phone, and the Rise followed, that showcases a sliding QWERTY keyboard. Both these smartphones are manufactured to run on CDMA networks, even though Kyocera has not yet proclaimed the availability of their carrier.

If we compare their specifications, they are both quite similar, as is their OS. In the time we have had with the phone, we were indulged with a very simple version of Ice Cream Sandwich that makes the Rise stand out in the world of QWERTY handsets – hopefully the future generation of the phone doesn’t have huge modifications. The phone is equipped with a Qualcomm MSM8655 SoC  processor that runs on 1GHz, a nice 3.5-inch, 480×320 IPS screen, a 3.2 megapixel camera that comes with LED flash and a 1,500 mAh battery. In contrast with other QWERTY slide phones, the Rise is rather small and fit our hand really well. We especially loved the sliding mechanism of the phone that had just the perfect amount of resistance to it, which didn’t feel forceful at all. The four-row keyboard is quite unremarkable, though it works all right for those who favor physical keys. The major gripe we have about Rise is the low quality of display, which seems like a huge gaffe, even if it is a budget device.

You’ll get 512MB of RAM, 2GB built-in along with a 2GB microSD card for memory. Furthermore, the Rise includes 802.11n(WiFi), Bluetooth2.1+EDR in addition to EV-DO Rev. A. It can be said that Kyocera is aiming to cater the budget audience through the Rise, but this might work out for them if other companies are unable to upgrade their QWERTY sliders to the most recent version of Android.
